Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day started as a day to honor soldiers who died fighting in the Civil War. Over the centuries, its purpose has expanded to include remembrance of all who died in any war. While its origins are sketchy, with many states claiming to be the first to devise such a celebration, Waterloo, NY was named as the official starting point of this holiday. Regardless of where it started, we can all continue on with the spirit of the day as we remember those who lost their lives in service through parades, parties and more.
