In China, two weeks out of every year are set aside for an official Chinese New Year celebration. Chinese-Americans who came to the U.S. centuries ago merged the old culture with some new traditions to create Chinese New Year parties that were uniquely theirs. Today, many people create various types of events to celebrate the Chinese New Year although they all focus on family and prosperity. With its ancient culture and intriguing traditions, the original Chinese New Year celebration was an extensive commemoration of family and prosperity that revolved around dinners and parties. Based on the Chinese New Year calendar (not the Gregorian calendar), the fun starts on New Year’s Eve with a huge family reunion dinner and progresses up to the 15th day of the year with the Lantern Festival. Many celebrations in the U.S. have been altered to better fit the Chinese-American way of life.
